Prior written approval by the Morningside Cemetery Board of Trustees is required for the type of stone used and the shape, size and design of all proposed headstones, markers and monuments to be placed at Morningside.
For the main family headstone or marker in a plot, the Board encourages use of traditional rectangular or square stones not higher than 4 feet including base. Monuments with obelisks or columns in simple clean lines may be allowed and may not exceed 8 feet from base to top. When placed in the family's plot, the above-ground headstone must line up with other stones in that row.
Markers in the form of benches are permitted and must be simple, rectangular designs with straight lines.
Granite or marble stones are preferred due to longevity and durability. If other materials are desired for a headstone or marker, a proposal for same should be submitted to the Board for consideration and approval.
Stones should be in light to medium range colors consistent with other stones now located in the Cemetery. No addition of other colors to a monument beyond the basic stone's natural colors will be permitted.
Engraved words on the stone such as the family name, the names of individuals or their cremains buried in the plot and their dates of birth and death will be consistent with the engravings on other markers in the Cemetery. In addition, one etched image/picture per stone, not to exceed 12 inches by 12 inches in size, will be permitted. The placement of a bronze plaque on a stone (such as the plaque on the Cyrus Prindle/Pringle stone) may also be proposed for consideration.
As required by Morningside Cemetery's Rules and Regulations, within three months of purchase, plot owners shall install granite or marble corner markers. The markers should measure approximately 6 inches by 6 inches and display the first letter of the last name(s) of the purchaser or persons to be interred. In instances in which burials in a plot involve more than one family name, the cornerstone may include use of an ampersand (for example, A&B) or a dash (A-B); or the purchaser/family may offer another proposed combination of the first letters of the last names to the Board for consideration.
Two casket burials or SIX cremains may be interred in each 10 foot by 10 foot plot. In instances in which more than one person or one set of cremains are to be interred in a single plot, there may be one main above-ground marker or monument and up to four smaller markers placed flush to the ground within that plot. The main above-ground marker must be in line with other headstones in that row. The flush markers should be no larger than 24 inches by 12 1/2 inches and, when placed, must allow for mowing directly over the markers. A diagram for placement of the flush markers within the plot must be submitted to the Board for approval before placement is undertaken.
