Morningside Cemetery was established as a community burial ground in the late 1700s. In 1917, the property was conveyed to a newly-formed nonprofit corporation. The Trustees of Morningside Cemetery Association have actively managed this historic Charlotte cemetery, preserving its legacy to the present day.
Morningside is one of Charlotte's hidden treasures. The names, dates and personalized dedications carved in the grave markers capture our historical past and current character.
Road names (Carpenter, Prindle, Garen) and landmark locations in town (Horsford, Quinlan, Pease) reflect the longevity and richness of our heritage.
The first person buried at Morningside was 26 year-old William Barker, who died in August 1796.
The Morningside Cemetery is locaated on Morningside Drive in East Charlotte, about 1/4-mile south of the intersection of Spear Street and Charlotte-Hinesburg Road. There are over 500 plots where past and current generations of Charlotters and their family members are buried. Attentive maintenance and carefully budgeted improvements ensure the grounds remain well-kept. Most other Charlotte cemeteries are full with no capacity available, but there are still a limited number of burial plots available at Morningside.
